Designed by Studio Nienke Hoogvliet
The RE-SEA ME stool is created after the search for sustainable materials out of the sea. Studio Nienke Hoogvliet discovered that fish skins are a waste product of the fishing industry, while you can also make them into beautiful leather. The first prototype was created in 2015 and is part of the permanent collection of the Centraal Museum. Recently, they teamed up with Objects With Narratives and have developed the stool further.
The stool is made with naturally tanned salmon leather from "Searious Fish". The skins used are a waste product from supermarket fish and otherwise would have been incinerated. Since fish have a different type of connective tissue compared to mammals, the leather of their skin is relatively stronger than regular leather. A precious quality, that this stool highlights.
The stool is designed with a system that allows the leather to be easily tensioned again or to replace a fishskin, with the aim to optimize the durability.

Wipe with a clean cloth wrung in water. Remove the water residue immediately using a clean, dry cloth. Avoid using any detergents, as the whole object exists out of sustainable materials and would like to stay that way. If the fish skin starts to rip, you can replace the old skin with a new one. In that case will Studio Nienke Hoogvliet send new fish leather as a replacement service.
The shape of the frame is remniscent of the historical stools used by local fishermen in the Netherlands. It is made from stainless steel, eliminating any extra coating. The piece is hand crafted locally in order to create a sustainable product from start to finish.
