Ernesto Azcárate

Based in Mexico City, Ernesto Azcárate studied Graphic Communication at Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM), where he was influenced by renowned mentors such as Melquiades Herrera, Juan Manuel de la Fuente, Félix Beltrán, and Marís Bustamante. His path into three-dimensional work began with building his own furniture, a practice that revealed a natural affinity for material exploration and spatial thinking.

While financing his studies by working on offshore oil platforms, he started creating objects from discarded materials-early experiments that evolved into illuminated sculptures and bespoke lamps for architectural projects. Later, he gained hands-on experience with a wide range of media while producing models, props, and sets for advertising.
A pivotal moment came with the design and furnishing of a ship for 400 people, where he developed a comprehensive approach to interiors and furniture.

This led to the founding of Mutable, a design brand focused on wood-based furniture.
Seven years later, Ernesto transitioned towards a more sculptural practice, creating collectible design pieces-handmade, unique, and crafted with a deep connection between design and art.

Today, his work is represented internationally by Objects With Narratives, positioning his practice within the growing field of collectible design.

"My practice unfolds through a progressive and iterative process, where ideas emerge and transform the work as it develops. Rather than pursuing a predetermined outcome, l embrace experimentation, allowing reflections and adjustments to guide the evolution of each piece."

Ernesto's approach often begins with material-its history, its limitations, and its possibilities. Early on, I was drawn to discarded objects and industrial remnants, reshaping them into illuminated pieces and functional forms.

That dialogue with material remains central: it is through working with wood, metal, and other mediums that I discover shapes that hold memory, embody experience, and evoke emotion.

The results are objects that stand at the intersection of functionality and expression-pieces that are both familiar and unexpected, intimate yet enduring. Each work is a witness of time and process, carrying the rigor of craft while leaving space for reflection and interpretation.
My work belongs to the field of collectible design, where uniqueness and narrative matter more than repetition. What I seek is not mass production, but the creation of singular pieces that expand how we experience material, form, and ultimately, life itself.
