Banded Convex Fold V is part of an ongoing series of ceramic sculptures that explore the boundaries of material and the characteristics of form. It has been developed from a preoccupation of applying fixed processes to making and assembled from the rhythmic stacking of incised parian clay spheres that are deliberately distorted
by following the specific steps of a making process – Repetition, Compression, Cut and Fold. The layering of the surface purposely weaves in and around the form, drawing out the innate qualities of the material and translating a theme of duality
in it’s appearance – the contrast of visual distortion and precision, the stillness
and movement in form and the surface deception between synthetic and natural.

About the designer
I am drawn to using materials in ways other than their conventional application. My current work explores the language of making through the materiality and physicality of clay. Fascinated by process-led art, I adapt traditional techniques to provoke unanticipated outcomes, using clay as a medium that sustains the narrative of the making process. The resulting forms embody my interaction and manipulation of the clay, and are created from a combination of throwing, hand building and the use of bespoke tools to explore the intrinsic properties of the material.
