Designed by Ben Storms
In its intriguing combination, the composition represents contrasts that at once find and challenge each other. The starting point for this wall sculpture is a distinct volume whose forms are determined by a newly developed technique based on Ben’s earlier In Hale series. Similarly, the volume is hollow, composed of stainless-steel sheets welded together. Rather than being inflated, however, the initial configuration is reshaped under high pressure. This is reflected in the decisiveness of the folds, which, although inherently uncontrollable, are the result of a carefully managed process.
The reflectivity of the mirrored supporting volume is answered by a second element. A cast marble block, with the echoes of its quarrying still palpable, joins the whole with its peculiar roughness. The untreated cast aluminium, which represents the stone and just as surprisingly contradicts it, captures the surrounding light, adding a focal point that boldly absorbs the gaze. Yet the conflict that arises between the inscrutability of geological processes and the human hand that brings them to the present day through the cast material, celebrates above all a sensitivity to materiality.
Variations can be custom made.
