Designed by Ben Storms
Carved from a single block of intriguing green onyx, Ben Storms has taken a distorted steel structure as the starting point for this sculptural coffee table. Specific to his practice, where ideas flow from one another, his newly developed Crushed method has here been translated into a massive entity, a monumental statement. The initial steel form, constructed from welded metal sheets and subjected to intense pressure to achieve its idiosyncratic appearance, is then three-dimensionally scanned and meticulously recreated in natural stone, a play on perception and expectation.
The exquisite character of green onyx is the result of thousands of years of seeping water and seems to preserve the fluidity of this process. With its apparent transparency, almost crystalline quality and unique patterns, the design questions materiality. The partial polishing of the result further challenges and confirms the illusion of fluidity of a solid material.
Variations can be custom made.
