There are many layers within the process of creation of the Red Cut bench and the origin of its conception and design.
There is within the centre of the piece a rift and division of structure, gap set as a jolted shift. It is deliberately not symmetrical, yet the form exists in a state of balance embodying the trepidation of potential dis-juncture. The scars to the most part have been left visible and open. The central body cut fracture is held together with stainless steel pins, which can be glimpsed within.
The surface is weathered, blown with raised grain not silky smooth to the touch.
The sitter though is invited to explore and linger. Interlocking carved dished hollows give comfort to rest upon. The ‘isle’ type form allows visitors to sit almost back to back or off set to the side – an opportunity to perhaps engage in conversation and wonder.

About the designer
I seek to create pure un-diluted forms that speak with passion and resonate with our desire to experience something truly unique; an innate expression of wonder and beauty rooted in a pragmatic approach in the truth to materials and working process. I design and hand make, carve and sculpt wooden seating objects whilst also working with artisan foundries in order to realise my designs in other materiality, creating functional works of art for the 21st century and beyond.
It is one thing to have an idea in one’s mind, it is another thing altogether to be able to translate that concept into a manifest reality.
