His ongoing lamp series Bonum Lumen is perhaps the most concentrated expression of this vision. Here, Karl explores the psychoactive components of fungi; inner light embodied into physical manifestation, illuminating an environment from within. The works are physically represented as out-of-place, steampunk-inflected metal entities. Visible rivets, oxidized surfaces, the slow transformation of metal over time: these are not incidental qualities but central ones. They are constructions in bronze, copper, and brass that sit comfortably in a space without quite belonging to it. Their surfaces patinate slowly toward deep verdigris, changing with time and atmosphere, designed to interact with the environments they inhabit rather than simply occupy them.
