This ceramic piece from the Gongkai Series embodies a raw form of abstract expressionism, transforming volcanic clay and pigments into a canvas of chaotic beauty. The outer surface is left unglazed; instead, contrasting pigments have been vigorously applied, creating a dynamic interplay of color and texture inspired by the bold experimentation of modernist painters.
The surface is heavily textured and almost brutalist in nature, marked by deep crevices and irregular volumes that reflect a process of controlled chaos. Pigments are applied through impulsive, forceful gestures, thrown onto the form in movements that are both compulsive and deliberate. Each angle reveals traces of the artist’s physical engagement, where spontaneity and intention collide. The result is a piece that feels both fierce and captivating, a visceral tribute to the raw energy of material and emotion.
