About the artist
After studying industrial design at Olivier de Serres (Paris) and then at LAAB (Rennes), Jules Lobgeois turned his attention to sculpture applied to objects. He trained at Atelier Bannel, which specializes in the restoration of Jean Prouvé’s metal structures, and later worked as an assistant to the Belgian furniture designer Kaspar Hamacher. Following these experiences, he founded his own design studio in 2018, where he creates sculptural pieces of furniture. In a constant dialogue between the material and his tools, Jules Lobgeois combines wood and metal in a poetic union. He carves futuristic curves into the wood that seem to embrace the cold, bright light of the metal.
Jules Lobgeois’s work rarely begins with an idea, but rather with a piece of wood. Based in Normandy, where he is restoring a house and planting various tree species himself, the sculptor-designer has developed a practice directly tied to his surroundings. As he plants, his relationship with the material transforms; wood ceases to be a readily available resource and becomes the result of a long process. Working is no longer about producing a form, but about working with what is already there.
