Crushed Cast Glass Coffee Table is a further development of the designer’s material research, this new variation of the In Hale table uses cast glass as a material. Storms moulded his existing table with plaster and cast glass into the empty mould, allowing the liquid material to fill the empty space. Once cooled down, the mould was broken. The resulting glass shape bears the traces of this process. Instead of showcasing the lightness and delicacy that we usually ascribe to glass, this work thus reveals the solid, dense side of the same material.

 

About the artist

Ben Storms is a Belgian designer and craftsman who thinks in terms of materials. By using state-of-the-art techniques he transforms them to captivating shapes that defy expectations.
Storms equally masters thinking and making. He has refined his craft as a stonemason, sculptor and woodworker. In his practice, he often combines traditional techniques with high-tech processes to create unique pieces of furniture with a sculptural character.
