Designed by Ben Storms
The Pattern Cut technique is a new approach that emphasises Storms’ individuality as a designer. Visually similar to his Crushed technique, it involves deforming and bending metal. However, by creating each plate as though it were a pattern for a handmade garment, Storms can largely predict the outcome. While the Crushed technique was uncontrollable, the curves that define this design are predefined and crafted accordingly.
The surfaces are purposefully treated to create contrast. One surface is golden brass and the other is silver. The latter creates a particularly singular aesthetic. As the silver was applied in liquid form and heated by the fire, as in welding, it takes on its unique appearance. While it
still seems to be liquid, it is indeed solidified.
