Raw lacquer, or saengchil, extracted from the lacquer tree in nature, possesses a unique viscosity and fluidity. This work undergoes dozens or even hundreds of cycles of application and curing, leaving behind striking traces and a profound depth of color on the surface. By constructing form solely with lacquer—without any supporting structure such as wood or metal—the technique aims to express the material of lacquer itself as a sculptural language.
About the artist
Sung-Youl Park is a pioneering Korean lacquer artist whose work uniquely elevates lacquer from a traditional finish to the central structural material of sculpture. Educated at Pai Chai University, he forges his creative path by teaching and running his own ottchil workshop.
