Hakmin Lee has made a series of surreal looking furniture pieces inspired by sub-culture such as toy figurines, cartoons and street art. The project began when the designer became fascinated by the blurred line that exists between art and design, luxury fashion and street fashion, high culture and sub culture. He therefore attempted to combine furniture with toys and figures to create the sculptural ‘paw’ furniture series.
Hakmin uses an aluminium sand casting technique to capture the details of the objects textured surface, resulting in a very tactile appearance. The playful design integrates oversized paws, whether serving as the feet of the bench or clutching the glass surface of the side table. in this way, the series brings an element of humour to typical furniture.
About the artist
Studio HAK is Seoul based studio led by designer Hakmin Lee, who has an ambition bringing humor to our environments through everyday objects. After studying metal craft at Kookmin University (South Korea) and conceptual design at Design Academy Eindhoven (The Netherlands), the designer now works across various fields such as furniture, decorative object, art toy, illustration and conceptual design.
