Born from the quiet immensities of the Karoo, the vast semi-arid region of South Africa, the Cavus Collection explores the language of hollows, ridges, and recesses carved by time. The Karoo’s open plains, rugged escarpments, and resilient flora leave a lasting impression on the imagination—its shifting light across stone and soil, and vast skies stretching beyond the horizon, shaping the way we perceive space, form, and stillness.
My connection to this landscape runs deep. Childhood journeys along its gravel roads and through its orchards, combined with last year’s renewed exploration, allowed me to translate the Karoo’s stillness, hidden textures, and contemplative emptiness into sculptural form.
From an early age, the surrealist movement and the work of Walter Battiss shaped my visual language, encouraging me to see the world as both tangible and imagined, where memory, imagination, and matter converge. In Cavus, these influences surface subtly, in forms that feel both organic and slightly otherworldly.
About the artist
Jan Ernst is a multidisciplinary creative specializing in functional art and spatial design using clay as his main medium. The work is driven by his fascination with natural structures such as corals, fungi and rock formations. His organic designs stem from his abstract understanding of form and space influenced by his background in architecture, his connection with the natural world and his South African heritage.
