Foam Catchers continues Anton Hendrik Denys's experimental research into coated foam structures. Building upon his earlier work Foam Fences, the light sculptures explore the three-dimensionality of these graphic foam grids. Having mastered this self-developed technique through the years, he took time during the pandemic to further explore its volumetric potential. Inspired by handwoven baskets, the structures take this craft into new realms to properly catch the light. The material’s rigidness resulted in undefinable shapes that land somewhere between a beam and a cylinder. Combined with the unpredictably shaped grid, the Foam Catchers explore unfamiliar aesthetics that challenge standard design ideals. The foam's coating has a hard, shiny ceramic look that contrasts with the softness of the frame and airily suspension. This contradiction is reinforced by the similarly coloured metal hanging structure with incorporated light sources, tailor-made in height to the customer's needs. The sculptures continue on Anton Hendrik Denys's signature style of combining the familiar with the unexpected while combining diverse techniques. Foam Catchers adds a new spatial chapter to his exploration of coated foam in which the integration of light lifts the technique to new heights.
